My Mother's maiden name was Maureen Veronica O'Brien and she was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. We moved from Massachusetts to Kentucky in 1969 at a time when there were very few Yankee Irish Catholics to be found in that area. As she was registering us for school the first time, when she came to the section of the form asking for "nationality", she wrote the words "Irish American".
